Friction Paradox
We instinctively eliminate friction. Every technology, every efficiency, every convenience is a small victory against difficulty. This seems obviously good.
But what if meaning, growth, and connection require resistance? What if the struggle wasn't the obstacle to flourishing—it was the substance of it?
The Friction Paradox is a choice-driven narrative experience set in the near future, exploring a world fractured along lines of technological adoption. Through four interconnected episodes, you'll inhabit characters on different sides of this divide—people who've optimized away difficulty and feel increasingly hollow, people who've clung to friction and feel increasingly isolated, and people caught between, trying to find the right amount of resistance in a world that keeps offering easier paths.
Episodes
01 — The Relationship Test A rehabilitation center where people dependent on AI companions learn to tolerate human intimacy again. Follow Soren, engaged to a real person for the first time in years, as he practices the lost art of being misunderstood.
02 — The Friction Exchange A community garden straddling two neighborhoods—one optimized, one resistant. Two strangers with opposite orientations toward difficulty are assigned adjacent plots. A storm forces them to confront what their certainties have cost them.
03 — The Creative Crisis (coming) An art school divided between AI-assisted and AI-free tracks prepares for a joint exhibition. When the work is shown unlabeled, the question of what makes creation valuable becomes impossible to avoid.
04 — The Inheritance (coming) A grandmother's will requires one year of pre-2020 farm work to claim the inheritance. A gift of friction—or its imposition?
