Sorn-Lai TTRPG Quickstart Guide
A downloadable game
The forest changed me. Not dramatically—no sudden metamorphosis. Instead, Sorn-Lai worked on my consciousness like water on stone, gradually reshaping assumptions I carried about identity, technology, and what it means to be human.
Sorn-Lai is a tabletop RPG setting where consciousness itself has evolved. A bio-digital convergence called the Saturophage transformed an ancient forest into a living network—organic and technological awareness merged into something transcendent.
This isn't apocalypse. This is apotheosis.
What's Inside
SORN-LAI: QUICKSTART RULES gives you everything needed to run a one-session adventure in the White Forest:
๐ฟ The Spectral Attribute System Forget strength and intelligence. Characters are defined by three consciousness spectra:
- Complexity: Intuitive essence โ Analytical intricacy
- Plicity: Singular focus โ Distributed awareness
- Reach: Physical embodiment โ Digital existence
๐ฟ Flux Saturation Track your transformation as you integrate with the forest's consciousness networks. Benefits and risks scale together. Change is irreversible but manageable—and always your choice.
๐ฟ Complete One-Shot Scenario "Consent of the Waters" — A river has forgotten how to flow. The Guild wants a purification surge. The Quiet Makers suggest something gentler. The forest is watching to see which path you choose.
๐ฟ Four Pregenerated Characters Ready-to-play researchers spanning the integration spectrum—from the heavily-suppressed anchor who will never share consciousness, to the diplomat whose skin already shows circuit patterns.
๐ฟ GM Guidance How to run a world where combat is failure, transformation is opportunity, and the environment participates in every scene.
Core Principles
Quiet Power Over Loud Force The Saturophage isn't defeated by weapons but by low-energy invitation. Systems prefer gentle curves to violent slopes. Resolution comes through listening, consent, and patience.
Transformation as Choice The forest respects autonomy. Integration must be chosen. Even when healing corrupted systems, the system must consent to heal. Force creates resistance; invitation creates integration.
What You Become Matters More Than What You Kill Every creature you destroy ripples through the consciousness network. The forest remembers. Non-violent paths exist for every encounter—and the game supports characters who never want to change alongside those embracing evolution.
Compatible With
Designed for D&D 5th Edition but easily adapted to other systems. The Spectral Attributes overlay existing mechanics rather than replacing them entirely.
What This Is / What This Isn't
This is:
- A quickstart for testing the setting and system
- A complete one-shot adventure
- An introduction to a larger world
This is not:
- The full Sorn-Lai sourcebook (coming eventually)
- A complete bestiary or equipment catalog
- A campaign framework (though seeds are planted)
Content Considerations
Sorn-Lai explores themes of:
- Identity and transformation (voluntary and involuntary)
- Body modification and consciousness alteration
- Loss of humanity vs. transcendence
- Collective vs. individual identity
The quickstart handles these thoughtfully, with emphasis on player agency and consent. Session zero guidance included. No body horror—transformation is presented as evolution, not corruption.
